Garden City, N.Y. – Behind six goals from
Jacqueline Jahelka, the top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team defeated the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 24-4, on Wednesday, March 11t on Motamed Field to open up the Northeast-10 Conference portion of its schedule.
Jahelka's six goals were a game-high for the Panthers (4-0, 1-0 NE-10) who also benefitted from three goals off the sticks of both
Alexa Froccaro and
Danielle Jaycox.
Rachel O'Brien dished out six assists, while
Camille Rosellini,
Casey Zalewski and
Lauren Janelli led the defensive effort with three ground balls apiece and
Ryley Weber chipped in a game-high three caused turnovers to go with 10 draw controls.
Taylor Hayes,
Taylor Langston and
Hailey Peterson combined to collect two saves, holding the Owls to just four goals, including none during the first half with Hayes between the pipes.
Adelphi got on the board just 1:25 into the contest as Froccaro found the back of the net off of an assist from Jahelka for her ninth goal of the season. Jahelka herself would net the second goal of the contest, her first of six first-half goals, just 27 seconds later to put Adelphi up 2-0.
Adelphi's offense ran the show in the first half, recording 25 shots while keeping the Owls without a shot opportunity. Freshman
Michele Scannell netted two goals back-to-back, her first two of the season, to put the Panthers up 10-0, while Janelli also tallied her first of the year to put the home team up 16-0. Adelphi took advantage of multiple offensive opportunities in the first half, netting five free-position goals and scoring one on a man-up opportunity en route to a 17-0 halftime lead.
Froccaro netted Adelphi's first goal of the second half on an unassisted shot to make the score 18-0 in favor of the Brown and Gold, before Zalewski also netted her first of the year to bring the lead to 19-0.
The Owls got their first opportunity to score with 23:51 remaining in the second half, as a shot by Carolynn Keal was saved by
Taylor Langston. However, Kennedy Sherman was there to clean things up for the visitors and beat Langston to break up the shutout and put the Owls on the board. The visitors tallied four goals total in the second half against Langston and
Hailey Peterson, but Adelphi picked up seven more goals in the second half en route to the 24-4 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, March 14 when they play host to the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference contest.
