Bowling Finishes Second at Golden Bear Classic, Gotterbarn Named to All-Tournament Team

Allentown, PA – The Adelphi University women's bowling program moves to 46-54 overall as they competed in the inaugural Golden Bear Classic, hosted by Kutztown University this past weekend. After sitting fourth after the first two days of traditional baker format, the Panthers finished in second place, behind powerhouse Farleigh Dickinson University. For her efforts, freshman Rebecca Gotterbarn was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Day 1
On the first day of competition the team recorded a 3-2 overall record, posting wins against Caldwell, Kutztown University and Cheyney State. After defeating the Cougars, the kegglers of Adelphi fell to Felician by a close 901-898 pinfall. In their final match of the day, the Brown and Gold faced Delaware State University, who were ranked 19th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll.

Day 2
After falling to No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 10 Saint Francis University to start off Day 2, the Panthers picked up their only win of the day against New Jersey City, dropping the first game but coming back to finish 4-1. Franklin Pierce was another five-game match, as Adelphi came back to even the score at 2-2, but resulted in the Ravens taking the win 180-147 in the last game for the victory. In the final contest of the day, the Brown and Gold faced Delaware State to determine standings going into the final day. Delaware came out victorious defeating the Panthers 1,025-1,016 in total pinfall.

Day 3
The final day of the tournament started with the Hornets for the third time, in which Adelphi was able to redeem themselves, winning four out of the first five games to take the win. The team faced nationally ranked Saint Francis University in traditional baker format for their second game on the final day. After falling behind 3-1, Adelphi came back to take a 4-3 victory and advance to the championship round. Big frames by Gotterbarn, Erica Novak, Laura Zaugg and Leanne Reed all contributed to the defeat of both nationally ranked teams.  Facing top-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, Adelphi took one game out of five, however the Panthers concluded the day with a loss but earned second place overall.

"The girls battled all weekend and showed some real mental toughness," commented head coach Dennis Kearney. "A few of our players stepped up in big situations, helping us defeat nationally ranked teams."

Gotterbarn posted the second highest per frame average of the tournament, at 20.306 per frame, earning her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

The squad will return to the lanes on Saturday, February 28 in their final NEC Tournament of the season in Altoona, PA.
