Softball Drops First Two of 2015 to UC San Diego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Jolla, CA- The Adelphi University softball program opened up their 2015 campaign at the home stadium of the University of California, San Diego. Despite 13 hits over both games for the Panthers, the Tritons earned back-to-back victories Monday afternoon, 7-5 and 7-2 to improve to 11-1 overall. The Brown and Gold fall to 0-2 on the season.

Jordan Catalano swung a hot bat in the first game going 3-3 at the plate including one double and one RBI. Victoria Wink also contributed over both games going 3-7 with one RBI. Freshmen Krista King, Brenna Martini, Nicole Camera and Megan Lewis all recorded their first collegiate base hit in Game 1, despite the loss.

Game 1
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first asKing started things off with her first collegiate base hit. Catalano followed with a double of her own, but King was thrown out at the plate. This allowed Victoria Wink to get a base hit up the middle of her own, as Martini popped up, but registered her first collegiate RBI, scoring Catalano.

The Tritons scored the bulk of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as three straight bunts loaded the bases. With six total hits in the inning, San Diego managed to push five runs across, to take a 7-2 lead.

Leading off the top of the seventh inning for Adelphi, Nicole Camera collected her first collegiate hit with a shot down the right field line, legging out a triple. Tagging up, she cut the Triton lead to two, as Cutuli flew out to center field. Late effort base hits by Catalano and Wink were not enough as an easy fly out ended the game with a 7-5 decision in favor of the Tritons.

Game 2
Tritons took the opportunity to jump on the scoreboard first as a shot by Emily Sklencar to right-center drove in Kelsi Maday. Answering back in the next inning, Wink drove in Cutuli on a one-hopper to the fence, to tie the game at one apiece.

A controversial fair/foul call landed in favor of UC San Diego in the bottom of the third inning, coupled with a two-run shot over the left-center field fence giving the home team a 5-1 lead. The Tritons tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI shot down the right-field line by Emma Schneider.

The top of the seventh had Camera cross home on a wild pitch to make the score 7-2, but the Triton defense was no match as they closed out the inning and took away the second win of the afternoon.

The Brown and Gold will return to action on Tuesday, February 16 as they travel to Azusa Pacific to play the Cougars in doubleheader action starting at 1:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
