Women's Basketball Sunk By Dolphins, 65-58

Garden City, N.Y. -- Despite leading by 17 at one stage in the second quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell victim to a sustained rally by the visiting Le Moyne College Dolphins and dropped a 65-58 contest inside the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Gomez led all Adelphi (5-3, 2-2 NE-10) players in the loss with 18 points behind 7-14 shooting from the floor, while combining with Sierra Schrader and Sierra Clark for 21 of the team's 36 rebounds. For the Dolphins (3-5, 1-3 NE-10), Maggie Brown tallied a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, with Vandell Andrade adding 12.

The Panthers opened the scoring behind a three pointer by Tara Flynn just 25 seconds into the first quarter, and she capped an opening 10-2 scoring run for the Brown and Gold at the 6:25 mark. Adelphi's lead grew to as much as 12 in the opening frame, but the Dolphins began to show some signs of what was to come -- closing the Adelphi lead to 18-10 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

First came an 11-2 scoring run for the Panthers, which featured a pair of threes from Lauren Nuss and another from Gomez, as Adelphi built a 29-12 lead with 5:39 to go until halftime. From that point, the Dolphins' offense exploded for a 17-0 scoring run until the break, knotting the action at 29-29 as Adelphi went cold from the floor.

Four points off the hand of Clark to open the third quarter put Adelphi back in the lead, but the Dolphins again responded on offense -- taking a seven-point lead on an Ailayia Demand trey with 2:46 left in the quarter. The Panthers rallied for the next eight points, as a Nuss three put them back on top by one, 48-47, before Brown's final bucket of the period gave the Dolphins the lead back.

Le Moyne opened the final frame on a 9-2 scoring run to cement their advantage and take a lead that Adelphi was unable to rally back from in the final minutes. A Flynn trey brought the home team to within four, 59-55, but with the Panthers forced to foul, the Dolphins did their part at the line to seal the victory.

The Panthers hit the road for their next game, as they take on the College of St. Rose in Albany on Saturday, December 12 at 1:30 pm.
