Saint Leo, Fla. -- Traveling to Florida for their final contest of the 2015 calendar year, the Adelphi University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and saw the bench chip in 30 points in a 75-45 victory over the Saint Leo Lions on Wednesday night.
Calli Balfour led Adelphi (10-3) on the floor in the team's fifth straight win, totaling 13 points on 5-10 shooting to pace all scorers.
Sierra Schrader and
Tara Flynn each net 11 points for the Brown and Gold, as Schrader led the effort off the bench, tying a career-high in scoring and pulling in seven rebounds.
Lauren Nuss tallied seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 3-4 from behind the arc in the contest and also dishing out three assists. Mary Redmond tallied a team-high 10 points for Saint Leo (3-9) in the loss.
Adelphi doubled up Saint Leo in each of the first two periods, outscoring the hosts 12-6 and 22-11 in the first 20 minutes. The Brown and Gold started the game strongly, taking a 10-2 lead to open the game and holding the home Lions without a field goal until Chelsy Springs hit her first jumper to bring the score to 10-6 with 1:46 remaining in the first.
The Lions scored the first six points of the second quarter, tying the game for the first time at 12-12, but Balfour drove to the hoop for two just 14 seconds later to give Adelphi the lead back for good with 8:32 to go until the break. Leading by one, the Panthers closed out the second quarter on a 16-0 scoring run that spanned 5:44 minutes, turning a one-point, 18-17 contest into a 34-17 halftime lead. Schrader came off the bench to net eight of her points in the first half to lead all scorers, while Balfour added seven in the opening 20 minutes.
The third quarter featured more of the same, as the Brown and Gold outscored the hosts again by double-figures, 25-10 to lead 59-27. The Panthers opened the quarter on an 11-5 run over the first 3:15, as
Samantha Brenner kick-started the run with a jumper before Flynn sank two treys and
Ashley Gomez added a third. Adelphi proceeded to score the final nine points of the quarter as well, as Balfour and Schrader combined for the points over the final three minutes.
Facing a game-high 32 point deficit, the Lions again posted the first six points of the fourth quarter and held the Panthers scoreless for the first four minutes until
Natalie Fekula put in a fast break layup off the bench with 6:02 remaining. Fekula totaled four points and two assists in the final 10 minutes for the Panthers, while
Mary Beth Parslow tallied her first collegiate bucket and
Niajah Morgan capped off the contest with a three-pointer to seal the 75-45 victory.
Adelphi returns to Northeast-10 Conference action in the New Year on Saturday, January 2, welcoming Pace University to the Center for Recreation and Sport for a 1:30 pm contest.
