Women's Basketball Tops Bloomfield 84-70 In Double Overtime

Garden City, N.Y. – After regulation and one overtime session, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was able to jump out in the second overtime period and cap off an exciting afternoon of basketball inside the Center For Recreation and Sport with a 84-70 double overtime victory against Bloomfield.

After leading by eight at the half, Bloomfield created two separate three-point margins in the opening overtime period, however, Ashley Gomez spearheaded the Adelphi effort by scoring seven of the team's nine points and help force another period of extra time. In the second overtime, the Brown and Gold scored 16 points and allowed just two to finish off the 14-point victory.

Gomez put forth her second career-high in points for the week behind 24 points, as she tallied a then-career best 19 in a victory against Goldey-Beacom on Monday, to go along with six assists and five rebounds while Calli Balfour filled the stat sheet with 21 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks.

Chyna Golden put forth a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds for the Bears, helping the visitors create a rebounding advantage of 61-40 in the effort. Tianna Smith notched 19 points with five steals, leading five players in scoring double-figures.

An 8-0 run to close out the first half helped visiting Bloomfield go into the locker room with a 29-21 advantage, the largest margin for either team. During that stretch, Morgan Taylor picked up two assists to help spark open opportunities, after the Bears also ended the first period with a lead as Ariel Wilson knocked down a jumper with 15 seconds left to create a 16-15 score.

In the opening half, Tianna Smith led all scorers with 12 points for Bloomfield while also adding two steals. The Bears helped their effort with a 24-9 rebounding advantage led by eight from Chyna Golden. Gomez led six players in the scoring column for the Panthers with five points in addition to three assists.

After the Bears built a 10-point lead at 33-23 to start the third period, an 11-0 run from the Panthers capped off by a Samantha Brenner post jumper gave Adelphi a 34-33 advantage. With the Brown and Gold leading 39-36 in the final seconds, Smith hit a running three-pointer from the top right of the arc to force a tie of 39-39 going into the fourth period.

As both teams continued to trade baskets towards the end of the fourth period, Gomez's last second baseline jumper bounced just out and forcing overtime with the score tied at 59-59, but only after Bloomfield scored the final four points of the quarter to even the game.

In the two overtime sessions, Gomez and Balfour combined for 18 of the 25 points while Balfour added four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, while Julia Gnieser put in the first bucket of the second overtime period to put the Panthers on top for good.

The Panthers return to action in 10 days with a trip to Florida to face Saint Leo on Wednesday, December 30 at 7:00 pm for the final game of the 2015 calendar year.
