Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University women's basketball team claimed their third straight victory inside the confines of the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday night, as Panthers claimed a non-conference meeting with Dominican College, 53-39.
Samantha Brenner and
Tara Flynn controlled the offense for Adelphi as they combined for 21 points on 9-15 shooting, a 60.0% clip.
Sierra Clark and
Sierra Schrader, along with
Calli Balfour, cleaned up the boards for the Brown and Gold as they combined for 21 of the team's 43 total rebounds. Deja Gabbidon had a game-high 17 points for the Chargers (3-4).
Two early threes from Flynn put the Panthers (5-2) up 12-5 early in the first, a lead that they held on to for the duration of the contest. This followed a stint from
Ashley Gomez where she contribted four points to help cap an all-around and solid first quarter, helping the Brown and Gold enter the second period with a 14-7 lead.
The second quarter played to the beat of a similar drum as Adelphi extended its seven-point lead to eight behind a strong quarter from Brenner as she posted a steal, rebound and four points in just under five minutes of play. The first half was dominated by Clark and Schrader on the glass as they combined for 11 rebounds, more than half of the team's total boards. Dominican showed life at the end of the half as they cut the lead down to as little as five with just under three minutes to play, but the Panthers gathered themselves and sealed a first half lead of 26-18 going back to the locker room.
The second half was guided in by Clark as she scored four points to open the third quarter to push the Brown and Gold's lead to double figures. This controlled the offensive tempo for the Panthers as they closed out a rather low-scoring quarter with a nine-point lead, 35-26. The fourth quarter had a faster pace as the Panthers jumped out to a 41-28 lead behind a strong start from Brenner, with help from Balfour and Flynn, as the clock read just over six minutes to play in the game. From that point, the lead held up for the Panthers as they used an 18-13 scoring advantage in the quarter to take the 53-39 contest.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, December 5 as they welcome Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 12 pm.
