Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University men's basketball team closed out the 2015 calendar year in dramatic fashion on Friday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sports, coming away with a 94-91 victory over the visiting Concordia College Clippers in the final seconds.
Anthony Libroia led four Panthers in double-figures with 25 points on the night behind 10-12 shooting, while classmate
Ryan DeNicola recorded a double-double behind 18 points and 15 rebounds. Also in double figures was
Michael Coffey, whose 17 points came on five three-pointers, while
Nick Cambio chipped in 10 points in nine minutes of action off the bench.
The Clippers started strong, taking a 13-6 lead in the first five minutes behind six points from freshman Stephen Milhaven. A
Jack Laffey three kick-started a 10-3 scoring run for the Panthers, who knotted the score at 16-16 when DeNicola sunk two from the charity stripe at the 11:29 mark.
The next two minutes featured a flurry of scoring by both teams, but two threes from Coffey and another each from Laffey and Libroia pushed Adelphi (10-2) back ahead at 25-23, a lead which held for the duration of the half. The Brown and Gold lead expanded to double figures at 41-30 with 5:01 to play behind a 16-7 scoring run, but the Blue and Gold continued to battle and scored 14 of the final 21 points of the half to cut the Panther lead to just four, 48-44.
Libroia scored the first five points of the second half for the Brown and Gold, and a three-pointer from
Tavon Ginyard with 15:32 remaining restored Adelphi's double-digit advantage at 61-51 and capped the opening scoring run at 13-7. The Panthers continued to pile on the offensive pressure, as Cambio dropped eight points in the ensuing minutes to push Adelphi's midway lead to 16.
With Brown and Gold leading 81-65 at the 8:35 mark, the visitors exploded for a 13-2 scoring run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 83-78 and forced the Panthers to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Clippers' momentum continued, as they net nine of the next 13 points to knot the action at 87-87 with 2:03 to play.
On the ensuing play,
Conor McGuinness weaved through the defense and scored under the basket, and on the ensuing trip down the floor Laffey converted on the layup and one to put Adelphi up 92-87 with 1:21 to play. The Clippers proceeded to score the next four points, and after McGuinness missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Clippers took possession with just 11 ticks on the clock.
Out of the timeout, Concordia's Jalen Heath drove to the basket, but ran into Laffey who took the charge with just two seconds left. To ice the contest, Libroia was fouled and sank both at the line to allow the Panthers to escape with a thriller, 94-91.
