Garden City, N.Y. -- Four players net in double figures for the Adelphi Univesity women's basketball team on Wednesday night, as the Panthers defeated Queens College, ranked #21 nationally in the latest
USA Today Division II Coaches' Poll, 69-39.
Sierra Clark led the quartet in scoring with 19 points off the bench for Adelphi (8-3), while also leading the team with eight rebounds.
Samantha Brenner tallied a career-high 16 points on the night as she shot 7-13 from the floor, while
Ashley Gomez and
Calli Balfour chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Niajah Morgan and
Tara Flynn combined for nine of the team's 16 assists, while the Panthers also recorded 11 steals.
An 12-4 run in the first quarter, capped by a Balfour trey, set the tone for the contest as the Knights never led. The Panthers led by an 18-6 margin at the close of the first 10 minutes of play, and contined a torrid offensive pace throughout the contest. Gomez dropped down a pair of threes in the early going of the second quarter, extending the Adelphi lead to 24-9 with 7:34 left to play in the half. Balfour net seven points for the Panthers in the ensuing minutes and sank a layup with 3:08 to go to give Adelphi a 20-point cushion, 35-15. The Brown and Gold's lead stood at 19 (42-23) at the half as
Lauren Nuss drained a three-pointer with 19 ticks on the clock.
The Panthers continued their pace in the second half, out-scoring the Knights by a combined 27-16 margin in the third and fourth quarters -- including by a 17-4 margin in the third period. Clark totaled 15 points in the second half to lead Adelphi, as the Brown and Gold defense limited Queens to just 4-27 shooting from the floor.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, December 20 when they host Bloomfield College at 1:30 pm.
