Colchester, Vt. -- The Adelphi University volleyball team headed up north to take on the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference meeting on Friday night. Behind three players in double-figure kills, the Panthers came away with their 15th straight victory, 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16).
Mandy Stanislovaitis paced the Adelphi (20-4) attack with 20 kills, while McKenna Clawson and Shelby Stoner chipped in 15 and nine, respectively. Megan Manierski ran the offense with 49 assists, while Sierra Crook tallied 26 digs in the back row, while Clawson (12 digs) and Stanislovaitis (11) tallied double-doubles.The first set was one of runs, as Adelphi won the first three points, before the Purple Knights grabbed the next five only to see the Panthers take the next four to lead 7-5. A five-point string turned a 12-8 Panthers lead to a 13-12 Purple Knight advantage, but Adelphi again responded with six of the next eight to lead 18-16 on a
Madison Canestrari kill. The Panthers continued to ride the momentum, claiming a 25-20 set on the strength of a Stoner kill.
The second set unfolded in similar fashion, as both teams battled for a lead. A four-point spurt midway through, capped as Clawson and Canestrari teamed up for a block, gave the Panthers a 15-13 lead. The Purple Knights continued to battle until a Manierski kill knotted the second set at 18-18, and from that point, the Panthers ran off seven of the next nine points to take the set and the 2-0 lead, 25-20.
An early 3-0 lead for the Brown and Gold in set three quickly evaporated, and St. Michael's managed to tie or stay ahead for the duration of the third set. The home squad opened up a lead as large as 17-10, before the Panthers ran off six points in a row looking for the tie. While they equaled the score at 20, 21 and 23, the Purple Knights grabbed the last two points to stay in it and force a fourth.
Adelphi moved out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth, but the hosts battled back, knotting the score at 15-15 on a Catie Weller kill. However, the Panthers would not be denied the four-set win, taking 10 of the final 11 points to come away with the victory.
The Brown and Gold are back in action tomorrow, November 7, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a 1 pm NE-10 match.
