Garden City, N.Y. -- Behind hot shooting from senior
Tara Flynn, who knocked down a career-high five three-pointers, the Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated Long Island rival Dowling College, 65-46, on Monday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Flynn's 15 points, behind 5-10 shooting from behind the arc, led all scorers in the contest, and she was joined in double figures by
Ashley Gomez and
Sierra Clark, who each netted 10 points.
Sierra Schrader pulled down a team and career-high 12 rebounds in the win while chipping in eight points, to lead a Panther squad who out-rebounded the Lions by a 48-32 margin.
Flynn's first trey of the night put Adelphi on top 9-6 in the opening quarter, and the Panthers never trailed from that point. The Golden Lions stayed close in the opening quarter, however, ensuring that Adelphi led by just four, 18-14, at the close of the first 10 minutes of play. In the second frame, Adelphi outscored Dowling by a 13-9 margin, opening up what was a game-high eight point lead
at 26-18 courtesy of a
Calli Balfour layup off a fast break with 4:40 remaining. The Panthers again took that lead inside two minutes remaining twice, going to the break with a 31-23 lead off a Gomez trey as time expired.
Balanced scoring led Adelphi in the second half, as Flynn knocked down three from behind the arc to lead the squad. The Panthers' lead pushed to double figures early in the third quarter, extending to a high of 13 points four times -- the last coming at 47-34 on an
Emily Brandt bucket off the bench with 26 seconds remaining.
With five straight points to open the fourth quarter, Dowling cut the lead in half to 47-41 with 6:57 remaining. However, the Brown and Gold countered with 10 straight points over four minutes, capped by Flynn's fourth trey of the evening to bring the score to 57-41 with under three minutes to play. She added another just 30 seconds later, as Adelphi got additional buckets from Gomez and
Samantha Brenner to end the game by a 19-point, 65-46 margin.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, December 2 when they welcome in Dominican College for a non-conference tilt at 6 pm.
