Lincoln, Pa. – A last second opportunity fell short for Lincoln at the buzzer as the Adelphi University men's basketball team picked up a 75-74 victory earlier this evening on the road in non-conference action.
After a missed free throw from
Conor McGuinness, Joshua Davis hauled in the rebound and found Quaman Burton who was unable to have the game-winner fall for Lincoln as Adelphi held on the for the one-point victory.
Manny Suarez recorded a "double-double" of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers in both while
Anthony Libroia once again filled the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. McGuinness shot 5-for-10 from beyond the arc to register all 15 of his points.
Davis led the effort for the Lions with 14 points and seven rebounds while Burton added 12 points and four assists.
Two free throws at the end of the first half from
Tavon Ginyard gave the Panthers a 43-41 lead going into the halftime break after being up 37-29 with five minutes remaining. McGuiness helped produce the eight-point lead with his third 3-pointer of the contest.
Suarez scored 13 of his game-high in the first 20 minutes, shooting 5-for-6 from the field that included 3-for-4 from behind the arc. On the other end, Davis scored 12 points in 10 minutes to keep the Lions within striking distance
After another McGuinness trey put the Brown and Gold up 56-49 with just more than five minutes into the second half, a 10-0 run from the Lions capped off by a layup from Burton gave his team a 59-56 lead five minutes later.
With several ties and lead changes throughout the final moments, a 69-69 tie game turned into a 75-71 lead for Adelphi back-to-back 3-pointers from McGuiness and
Michael Coffey. From there, Burton was able to cut the deficit for Lincoln to 75-73. However, after being fouled, Burton was only able to convert one free throw to bring the Lions to within one at 75-74 with 46 seconds left.
Vernon Young followed with two missed free throws for the host with seven seconds left, unable to even the score. After Libroia brought in the rebound on the second miss, a front end miss by McGuinness on the ensuing foul was unable to translate into a game-winner for Lincoln as Burton's attempt was not to be.
The Brown and Gold return home this Saturday to face Le Moyne at 2:00 pm. The game time has been moved up from an original 3:30 pm start due to the NCAA Volleyball East Regional being hosted by Adelphi this weekend.
