Clutch Free Throws Push Men's Basketball To An 86-82 Victory At Roberts Wesleyan

Rochester, N.Y. - Late free throws helped the Adelphi University men's basketball team pick up an 86-82 non-conference road victory at Roberts Wesleyan earlier this afternoon.

Trailing 77-76 in the late stages of regulation, Conor McGuinness converted a layup and a three throw with 1:14 remaining to give the Panthers the lead for good on the way to their fifth victory. Including McGuiness's free throw, the Brown and Gold went 8-for-9 down the stretch from the line to secure the win.

Justin Jenkins led the offense with 21 points behind 9-for-14 shooting that included three 3-pointers while Ryan DeNicola added a "double-double" of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Coffey also reach double-digit scoring, aided by eight free throws towards 14 points. Additionally, Anthony Libroia paced the offense with eight assists to go along with six points and six rebounds.

Tyrel Dixon led all scorers behind 31 points for the Hawks to go with seven rebounds and two blocks. Malik Dare added 12 points and eight rebounds.

A 3-pointer from Jack Laffey gave Adelphi its largest lead of the first half at 19-7 with just about six minutes gone by. The Hawks managed to cut the deficit to two with 2:25 left on a Zack Panebianco jumper before Manny Suarez knocked down a trey with 48 seconds left to give the Panthers a 39-34 advantage heading into the locker room.

Jenkins scored 10 points in the first half behind 5-for-5 shooting in just eight minutes of action. The Brown and Gold also held the advantage in the paint by outscoring Roberts Wesleyan 18-6. Dixon led the home team with 12 points and five rebounds.

After Adelphi increased the lead to eight points to start the second half, an 11-3 run by the Hawks tied the game for the first time at 45-45. The home team then went off for a 10-0, totaling a 21-3 run to take a 10-point advantage at 55-45 with 12:46 remaining.

By continuing to chip into the lead, Adelphi tied the game at 69-69 with 5:08 left after a layup from Suarez. McGuinness followed with a 3-pointer a minute later to give Adelphi a 72-69 lead. After Roberts Wesleyan again had the lead at 77-76, McGuiness's "and-one" pushed the Panthers ahead for good.

Adelphi stays on the road for a 7:00 pm contest on Monday in Pennsylvania to face Lincoln.
