Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team held off a late fourth quarter run by visiting New Haven to pick up a 72-63 Northeast-10 Conference victory earlier this evening inside the Center For Recreation and Sport.
Sierra Clark and
Ashley Gomez each led the Panthers with 17 points apiece while Clark added nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Cali Balfour filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five assists with
Tara Flynn and
Haley Parks each coming up with three steals.
Clark put forth 12 points in the first quarter that helped Adelphi claim an 18-17 lead. Balfour scored her first points of the game on a jumper with 22 seconds left that pushed the Brown and Gold ahead.
After a tie score at 20-20 with 4:40 left in the second quarter, an 11-6 run for the Panthers capped off by a
Sierra Schrader layup with six seconds left gave her team a 31-26 lead going into the halftime break.
Clark ended the first half with a game-high 14 points while Lauren Hebert posted 11 points for the Chargers. Clark also added seven rebounds and a block in 15 minutes of action, helping Adelphi hold a 26-17 rebounding advantage in the first 20 minutes.
Adelphi used a 9-2 run to start the third period and create a 40-28 advantage that was highlighted by six points from
Samantha Brenner. After pushing the lead to 13 points on a layup from Gomez to make the score 47-34, New Haven put on a run of its own to cut the deficit to 50-46 at the end of quarter finished off by an "and-one" for Briana Bradford at the buzzer.
Another Adelphi run pushed the advantage to 11 points at 61-50 after a Gomez jumper. However, a 9-0 from New Haven cut the deficit to two points with less than three minutes left. The Panthers were able to hold on down the stretch, including four free throws from Gomez in the final stages to secure the victory.
The Panthers return after the Thanksgiving holiday to host Dowling on Monday, starting at 5:30 pm.
