Garden City, N.Y. - Long distance shooting proved to be key for the Adelphi University men's basketball team during a 77-70 Northeast-10 Conference victory against New Haven earlier this evening.
The Brown and Gold shot 14-for-34 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc on the way to the win led by four made by each
Manny Suarez and
Michael Coffey. Suarez shared the game-high of 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks while Coffey added 17 points.
Ryan DeNicola hauled in 13 rebounds along with
Anthony Libroia netting 11 points, five assists and two steals.
Despite eight made 3-pointers from the Panthers in the first half, New Haven managed to go into the locker room with a 34-29 lead. Helping the Charger cause was a 16-4 advantage in paint scoring to go along with 12 points off of 10 Adelphi turnovers. The first 18 of 19 points for the Brown and Gold to start the game came from beyond the arc.
Suarez led the Panthers with 11 points that included three 3-pointers while Coffey added six points behind two treys. Meanwhile, Jamal Mosley led all scorers with 15 for New Haven behind 6-for-8 shooting, including a 3-for-4 clip from downtown.
After New Haven went up by five points to start the second half, the Panthers used a 13-1 run to force a timeout by the Chargers after
Conor McGuinness buried a three to create a 44-37 lead. After building a 10-point lead, the Panther advantage was taken down to two points by the Chargers on a 3-pointer from Michael Bourke with less than eight minutes left at 54-52. However, another spurt helped create another margin for the Brown and Gold, including a layup from Libroia with less than three minutes reaming to make it 68-56.
Free throws down the stretch, including a pair each from McGuinness and Libroia helped secure the 77-70 win for the Brown and Gold. Adelphi finished the second half outscoring the Chargers 48-36.
The Panthers make a quick return to the floor after the Thanksgiving Holiday with a game in Rochester on Saturday to face non-conference foe Roberts Wesleyan.
