Springfield, Mass. -- In a rematch of last season's Northeast-10 Championship game, the American International College Yellow Jackets held the Adelphi University women's basketball team to single digits in two of four quarters en route to claiming a 70-41 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (2-2, 1-1 NE-10) got 11 points from
Calli Balfour off the bench and team-high eight rebounds from
Samantha Brenner in the contest, but were held to a .241 field goal percentage over the course of the 40 minutes. The Yellow Jackets (2-0, 2-0 NE-10) had four players in double figures, led by 15 points from Brianna Bishop.
The Yellow Jackets set the tone early, outscoring the Panthers 17-3 in the first quarter after
Tara Flynn sunk a game-opening three-pointer for the Brown and Gold. The Panthers clawed back to begin the second quarter, however, as an 8-2 scoring run featuring five points from
Sierra Clark and three from
Ashley Gomez pulled Adelphi within one possession, 18-15, with 8:15 to go until halftime. From that point, the Yellow Jackets embarked on a 10-0 scoring run which led to Adelphi's first full timeout of the contest. That did little to stem the home team's momentum, and AIC took a 39-20 lead into the break.
That advantage held up for the Black and Yellow for the entirety of the second half, despite Adelphi's best efforts to challenge for points. In the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets out-scored the Panthers by just one, 13-12, before pulling away with an 18-9 margin in the fourth quarter en route to a 71-40 final.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, November 24 when they play host to the Chargers of the University of New Haven in a 5:30 pm NE-10 contest.
