Springfield, Mass. – The Adelphi University men's basketball team used an early second half run to secure a 91-79 Northeast-10 Conference road victory at American International earlier today.
Michael Coffey led the effort for the Panthers with a career-high 34 points behind 8-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc, to tie a school record for 3-point field goals made. Meanwhile,
Anthony Libroia filled the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, and a like number of assists. Freshmen Tayvon Ginyard and
Jack Laffey combined for 23 points in reserve duty.
Five players were in double-figures for the Yellow Jackets, led by 19 points from Juwan Moody. Moody also added five rebounds and three assists Cameron Dobbs posted 18 points and two assists.
In the first half, a
Manny Suarez 3-pointer built a 10-point lead for the Brown and Gold halfway through the period at 21-11. Two free throws from Coffey with less than five minutes left pushed the lead back to 10 points at 31-21 after the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to five points twice.
The host again used a mini-run to bring the deficit to four points on a Bruce Spruell layup with 66 seconds left. However, an
Anthony Libroia layup allowed Adelphi to go into the locker room with a 43-37 advantage.
Libroia ended the first 20 minutes with nine points on that layup, with all of his points coming in the final four minutes. Meanwhile, Coffey scored all 17 of his points in the half during the first 15 minutes.
A dunk from Suarez sparked an 8-0 run to start the second period for the Panthers and create a 51-37 lead. The lead then ballooned to 20 points just ahead of four minutes into the second half on a
Ryan DeNicola layup.
Dobbs was able to help American International bring the lead to single digits again at 67-59, however, a quick 3-pointer from Coffey pushed the lead back to 11 points. The lead proved significant enough as the Brown and Gold went on to secure the 91-79 victory.
Adelphi returns home this Tuesday prior to the Thanksgiving break to host New Haven for a NE-10 contest starting at 7:30 pm inside the Center for Recreation and Sport.
