Garden City, N.Y. - A second half goal allowed the Adelphi University women's soccer team to post a 1-0 win against Philadelphia in the NCAA Tournament Second Round earlier today on Motamed Field and advance to next weekend's Third Round.
Despite outshooting the Rams 11-0 in the first 45 minutes, the Panthers were unable to connect on a strike to take an early lead.
Jeanine Nunez nearly gave the Brown and Gold the early advantage in the fourth minute, putting a head on the corner of
Laura Gomez that was saved by Courtney Shaw. Additionally,
Olivia Czavar had two chances fall short in the 29th minute as her initial shot hit the crossbar along with a follow up header going wide.
Shaw ended the first period with two saves with Adelphi creating those 11 shots as well as three corner kicks. Three different Panthers registered at least two shots in the half.
After
Meaghan Simmonds put forth the first shot of the second half in the 51st minute that was stopped by Shaw, a corner kick play six minutes later helped set up the lone tally of the contest. With Gomez putting in a short pass to Nunez on the right side of the corner kick, Nunez quickly sent the pass back to the junior forward who was able to put her shot off the finertips of Shaw into the back of the net.
Another seven shots in the period nearly each helped Adelphi grow the margin, however, four more saves from Shaw kept the Rams in striking distance. However, the defensive unit of
Taylor Groth,
Taylor Salmon, and
Nicole Forte along with
Melissa Rubin helped to not allow Philadelphia create a shot.
With the victory, the Panthers move onto face Bridgeport in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament after the Purple Knights defeated LIU Post 1-0 earlier today. Stay tuned to AUPanthers.com for more updates on game times and further information.
