Bridgeport, Conn. – Two unanswered second half goals allowed host University of Bridgeport to capture the NCAA East Regional Championship in a 2-1 victory against the Adelphi University women's soccer team earlier today.
The Panthers ended the first half with a 9-3 shot advantage after having a majority of play go through their offensive half. With those shots, Jennifer Wendelius was forced to make six saves to keep the Brown and Gold off the board. Meanwhile,
Anne Marie Ulliac made two stops in her 45 minutes of action.
Morgan Santoro forced a diving save from Wendelius in the 21
st minute before the resulting corner kick had a
Kelsey Simpson shot blocked down in front of the net. The next best threat for Adelphi came in the 32
nd minute as a free kick from
Taylor Salmon was poked out by Wendelius before the attempt could hit the upper right corner. The Panthers also created all four corner kicks in the half.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Brown and Gold were able to jump ahead thanks to
Samantha Lanza cleaning up a scrum in front of the net. The senior was able to find her way through the crowd and put the Brown and Gold up 1-0.
However, less than three minutes later, the Purple Knights were able to find the equalizer. Nicole Greenwald crossed a ball from the right end line that found Lauren Mengel standing wide open in front of the net to even the score at 1-1.
With the intensity picking up more on the field and significantly throughout the stadium, both teams played the next 23 minutes looking to find the game-winner. The Purple Knights were able to find that clincher in the 81
st minute as Nicola Worthington put on target a free kick from the left side that went perfectly into the upper right corner. Bridgeport hung on for the next nine minutes to earn the Third Round win.
The setback caps off an 18-3-2 season for the Panthers and the longest run in the NCAA Tournament since 2004.
