Brookville, N.Y. -- A banner afternoon for
Lena Pollich, courtesy of two goals and the assist on the third, led the Adelphi University field hockey team past Long Island and Northeast-10 Conference rival LIU Post on Wednesday, 3-1. With the victory, the Panthers snapped a six-year drought against the Pioneers, as their last victory in the head-to-head matchup came on September 23, 2009.
Before Pollich went off on the afternoon, the host Pioneers (5-5, 2-4 NE-10) had the first scoring opportunity of the game just 4:39 into the contest. Keliann Margiotta -- the NE-10's leader in goals a season ago -- challenged
Amanda Gargiulo in front of the Adephi (7-3, 4-1 NE-10) net; however, Gargiulo was up to the task and made her first of four saves in the half to keep the game scoreless. Pollich's first tally of the game came just over six minutes later, as she took a ball from
Molly Cuevas and beat Ericka Parks on the right side to give Adelphi the 1-0 lead. The game remained that way for another seven minutes before Pollich again had a hand in things, picking up an assist on an
Olivia Nowokunski left-side goal as Parks vacated the net that made the score 2-0.
The Pioneers would get one back before halftime, however, as consecutive penalty corners led to a scoring chance for the Pioneers in the 29th minute; Bailey Martin scored her first of the season off a cross from
Margiotta to cut the deficit in half at the break.
The Panthers took the first four shots of the second half as they came out with all the momentum, but it took until the 45th minute for Pollich to break through again and restore the two-goal lead. Pollich and Kristen Bagley beat the Pioneer defense, and the junior took the pass into the net for her second tally of the game. The score remained 3-1 in favor of the Panthers for the duration, as both teams took a combined three shots from that point.
Both teams took 11 shots on the contest, with the Panthers holding a slim advantage in shots on goal (7-6). Adelphi held a slim lead in penalty corners as well (6-5), and Gargiulo made five total saves to Parks' four.
The Panthers return to Motamed Field on Saturday, October 10th when they host the Hawks of Saint Anselm in a 1 pm NE-10 contest.
