Garden City, N.Y. -- Three days after having a hand in all three goals in a 3-1 win at LIU Post, junior
Lena Pollich scored twice to lead the Adelphi University field hockey team past Saint Anselm College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field.
With both teams posting identical records in Northeast-10 Conference play this season, it was the Panthers (8-3, 5-1 NE-10) who struck first in the 18th minute. Having already taken four team shots to the Hawks' two, Pollich took a pass from
Molly Cuevas through traffic and beat Hawks' keeper Katherine Sears to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The score remained as such for the duration of the half, and although the Hawks took two of their five shots in the game in the final five minutes, they could not muster the equalizer.
The Adelphi defense kept the Hawks from threatening
Amanda Gargiulo for nearly the entirety of the second half, and the Panthers scored the insurance goal they sought in the 57th minute. Off the bench,
Emily Power made a charge towards the goal and her cross met up with Pollich, who scored to Sears' right to make the score 2-0. Although the Panthers played a player down for the final minutes of the game after a yellow card on Cuevas, the Hawks (9-2, 4-2 NE-10) could muster little offense and Meghan Halligan's shot in the final minute was stopped by Gargiulo to preserve the shutout.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, October 13 when they travel to Pace University for a 7 pm NE-10 contest. The Panthers upended the Setters, 3-0, in a non-conference game earlier this year.
