Volleyball Takes Sixth Straight, Records Second Straight Five Set Comeback Over Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y. -- Looking for their sixth straight victory, the Adelphi University volleyball team headed upstate to take on the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday afternoon. For the second straight match, the Panthers trailed 2-1 but rallied for the 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-14, 15-12) win.

Mandy Stanislovaitis led Adelphi (11-4, 3-0 NE-10) in the comeback, recorded 21 kills behind a .298 hitting percentage and helping to anchor the defense with 15 digs. McKenna Clawson was the second Panther in double figures with 11, while Megan Manierski recorded 40 or more assists (41) for the third straight match and Sierra Crook again led the defensive effort with 20 digs.

Adelphi got off to a quick start in the opening set, leading 11-5 and holding a six-point advantage as late as 19-13. However, the Golden Knights began a comeback, taking eight of the next 10 points and knotted the action at 21-21 as Maryellen Devic and Shayna Webber blocked back a Bailey Riedel offering. Devic played a part in completing the Saint Rose comeback, recording two kills in the final five points to give the opener to the hosts, 25-23.

Both Adelphi and Saint Rose recorded 11 team kills in the second set, but the Panthers hit a sparkling .345 with just one attack error while the Golden Knights tallied 11 errors. Although the Panthers trailed 8-6, a Stoner kill set off an 11-4 run that gave the Brown and Gold a 17-12 lead and forced a Saint Rose timeout. Adelphi would not be denied, however, and wrapped up the set 25-17 on an attack error to level the match.

An 8-1 lead to start set three was enough for Saint Rose, and although Adelphi wouldn't go down easily, the Panthers never managed to get the deficit closer than three for the duration. At 16-13, the hosts took six straight points and wrapped up the set a short while later behind two kills and a block, 25-16.

Adelphi again faced an early deficit in the fourth as the Golden Knights took an 8-5 lead, but the Brown and Gold ran off an 11-1 mid-set scoring run -- in which Stanislovaitis recorded five kils -- that turned the momentum squarely in their favor at 16-9. A Riedel kill put the Panthers up 20-11, and Clawson, Amanda Borges and Shelby Stoner each pinned a ball down in the final five points to send the match to five, 25-14.

Adelphi opened up a commanding 8-2 lead in the fifth and final set, with six kills coming from Madison Canestrari, Stanislovaitis and Riedel. The Golden Knights continued to battle, however, taking the next four points to trail by two. The two teams continued to exchange points, but Adelphi's early lead pulled them through to the end and a final kill from Riedel secured the match and comeback.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, October 9, when they travel to the University of Bridgeport at 7 pm.
