Garden City, N.Y. – A turn from a defensive contest to an offensive contest in two halves led to a 1-1 draw between the Adelphi University men's soccer team and 11th ranked Merrimack this evening in Northeast-10 Conference action on Motamed Field.
After both squads only came up with three shots in the opening half, a different energy was found in the second period that led to a combined 19 shots. Adelphi controlled that margin 11-8 which helped produced the game's first score.
In the 50th minute, a perfectly placed cross from the left flank from
John Stojcevski found
Caelan Hueber's head on the far post. Hueber finished the header with a goal into the left side of the net. However, the Warriors were not far behind from finding their own strike.
Less than 11 minutes later, Oscar Zepeda Cagide knotted the contest at 1-1 with a strike from outside the box. After a loose ball came to the feet of Cagide, the forward put an impressive foot to the ball that went just over the reach of
Sergio Reyes.
Nearly 30 minutes of regulation and another 20 minutes of extra time was unable to decide a winner in today's contest, as the defense once again shined in the overtime period. Adelphi managed two shots in each period, while Merrimack notched one in the final 10 minutes.
Both teams created three corner kicks each with Adelphi finishing the game leading in shots 17-10. Both goalkeepers helped keep their respective squads in the game as Lucas Rezende made six stops for the Warriors and Reyes finished his evening with three saves.
The Panthers return Tuesday night for a non-conference contest against Queens, scheduled for 7:00 pm on Motamed Field.
