Field Hockey Runs Past the Greyhounds, 4-2

Garden City, N.Y. -- Two goals from senior Kristen Bagley made the difference in a 4-2 win for the Adelphi University field hockey team over the visiting Greyhounds of Assumption College on Tuesday night at Motamed Field, in a key battle at the top of the Northeast-10 Conference standings.

The Panthers (13-4, 9-2 NE-10) spent much of the first half in the Assumption end of the field but were unable to break through for much of the early going, action that was highlighted by Amanda Frank's defensive save on Rachel Colvin in the 17th minute. Adelphi eventually scored the first goal of the contest, and only goal of the first half, in the 27th minute when Lena Pollich took Molly Cuevas' deflected shot into the cage to give the home team the early lead. Adelphi had the edge in total shots in the opening 35 minutes, striking 12 while holding the Greyhounds (12-5, 9-2 NE-10) without a shot to head into halftime with the slim advantage.

Bagley kicked off the second half for the Panthers, scoring twice in the span of five minutes to turn the 1-0 game into a 3-0 game in the 52nd minute. After Colvin sent in a penalty corner in the 47th minute, Bagley tipped in a cross from Jamie Ahrens to score her first, before firing a second past Assumption keeper Bridget Boyle on the Panthers' next trip up the field. Cuevas tacked on one more goal for the Brown and Gold after an Assumption timeout, cracking one through from the top of the arc, to put the home team up 4-0 at the midway point of the second half.

From there, the Greyhounds found the momentum that has taken them to the top of the NE-10 this season, getting two goals back in a less than two minute span to slash the lead to 4-2. However, in the closing minutes, the Adelphi defense stood strong and did not allow any further looks to the Greyhounds, coming away with the 4-2 win.

Amanda Gargiulo came up with five saves in the second half for Adelphi, as she faced nine shots from the Greyhounds' offense, while Adelphi held an 18-9 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 lead in penalty corners.

The Panthers return to action for their regular season finale on Saturday, October 31, as they will celebrate eight seniors prior to a 12 pm tilt with Southern New Hampshire.
