Field Hockey Stymies SNHU on Senior Day, 8-1

Garden City, N.Y. -- With goals from six different players, the Adelphi University field hockey team closed out the regular season with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Panthers honored their eight graduating seasons: Kristen Bagley, Nicolette Lodato, Molly Cuevas, Brooke Bittel, Dana Ahrens, Maria Guerrisi, Olivia Nowokunski and Kelly Serrao.

Adelphi (14-4, 10-2 NE-10) got on the board less than 10 minutes into the contest as Elizabeth Mercuri scored her first of two goals on the afternoon off a pass from Lena Pollich after Penmen keeper Jill Piacitelli had vacated the cage. It was one of three goals Adelphi scored in the opening half -- with Pollich having a hand in all three -- as she scored twice within the span of four minutes off of two feeds from Cuevas to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home squad at halftime.

Bagley opened up the second half with a goal off of a rebounded shot by Jamie Ahrens that was saved to make the score 4-0, before SNHU got one back when Maddie Holt beat Serrao in the 46th minute. From there, the Adelphi offense exploded for four unanswered goals to close out the contest, with Rachel Colvin, Cuevas, Kate Manson and Mercuri all scoring to close out the day. Manson's goal off a pass from Cuevas at the 53:01 mark was the first goal for a Panther freshman on the season.

The Panthers, by virtue of Merrimack's loss to Saint Anselm this afternoon, earn the top seed in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament and receive a bye into the semifinals which will be held at Adelphi on Friday, Nov. 6 against an opponent to be determined.
