North Andover, Mass. -- The Adelphi University field hockey team had its nine-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Warriors of Merrimack College Warriors on Friday evening, as a goal in the 48th minute by Warrior freshman Mary McNeil proved decisive in the Northeast-10 Conference contest.
Adelphi, ranked No. 8 nationally coming into the game, and Merrimack, ranked No. 6, went toe-to-toe for the opening half with neither team finding the back of the net. Although the Panthers (12-4, 8-2 NE-10) held a 26-13 advantage in shots over the course of the contest, they were unable to solve senior keeper Madison Davis, who made seven saves for the Warriors in the victory.
The lone goal of the game came from McNeil from her own penalty corner, as she eventually found open space by the far post and tipped Delaney Yule's shot past
Amanda Gargiulo. The Panthers had several opportunities to net the equalizer late in the second half, including a goal that went off an Adelphi player and was disallowed, but were unable to rally for the tie. At the end of the 70 minutes, Adelphi came away with its first loss in exactly a month, dating back to a 3-0 setback at Stonehill College on September 23.
The Panthers return to action for a 4 pm NE-10 contest on Tuesday, October 27, when they host the first-place Greyhounds of Assumption College on Motamed Field.
