Field Hockey Tames Mavericks, 5-0

Garden City, N.Y. -- Senior Molly Cuevas registered six points (2G, 2A) to lead the Adelphi University field hockey team past the Mercy College Mavericks, 5-0, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon on Motamed Field.

The Panthers, who dominated the time of posession and squared up 40 shots while holding the visitors shotless, taking 14 shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. However, Mercy goalkeeper Julia Amell was up to the challenge, stopping six of those shots -- her first of 15 saves on the afternoon. At the 22:58 mark, Elizabeth Mercuri finally broke through her defenses, taking the cross from Lena Pollich to beat Amell high to the right to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead.

That lead quickly expanded to 3-0 as Cuevas tallied her two scores within three mintues of each other, beating Amell from the middle of the circle each time -- first off a pass from Kristen Bagley and then unassisted. The score remained as such for the duration of the half, although Amell was forced to save consecutive shots from Mercuri in the closing minutes.

Cuevas and Bagley joined forces again, this time switching roles, in the 42nd minute to make the score 4-0. After Charlotte Smith's initial shot was saved, Cuevas took the rebound, passed to Bagley who duly converted for the goal. Rachel Colvin netted the final score of the afternoon for the Panthers, off of Cuevas' second assist, with just 2:10 left to play to cap off the shutout.

The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, October 17th when they host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in a 12 pm contest.
