Adelphi Bowling Captures 9th Place at Kutztown Invitational

Individual Results
Reading, PA -
The Adelphi University women's bowling program finished their first tournament of 2015 in ninth place out of a field of 28 teams at the Kutztown University Invitational this past weekend. After completing baker-format on Friday, January 23 with a 4-2 overall record, the Panthers went on to end the weekend at 10-5.

On the first day of traditional format, the Brown and Gold kegglers finished 4-2 after facing some of the top teams in the nation. With the first three wins under their belts against Coppin State, North Carolina Central and No. 3 Arkansas University, the team dropped a close contest to Bethune-Cookman, 978-954. In the final two matches of the day, Adelphi fell to Stephen F. Austin but ended on a high note with an 876-867 victory over Valparaiso University.

The final day started with NEC member LIU Brooklyn, who was tied with Adelphi for No. 6 in the conference in the December standings. In best of seven baker-format, the teams battled back-and-forth, forcing a seventh game, but ultimately LIU walked away with the win. The Panthers next faced Delaware State University, winning four games out of six and eliminating the seventh game.

With a loss to North Carolina A&T State University, the Blackbirds of LIU were once again put up against the Brown and Gold of Adelphi University in the final contest of the day. The team pushed through five matches, and won the last three after being even with LIU at 1-1 apiece.

"The squad rose to the challenge this weekend by beating a number of ranked teams," said head coach Dennis Kearney. "They showed that when they put the work in during the break that it will reflect on the lanes in the games."

Top performers from the Adelphi squad were Kathryn Rivera, Rebecca Gotterbarn and Laura Zaugg, who posted frame averages of 20.705, 19.175 and 19.536, respectively. Joanna Viscuso also averaged in the nineteen's with a 19.402 frame average this past weekend.

With the second half of the season underway, Coach Kearney has high hopes for the upcoming tournaments, which are expected to be challenging. "The NEC event in Altoona, Pennsylvania and the tournament in Nashville, Tennessee are two events with a number of excellent teams competing in them."

The kegglers will return back to the lanes on Friday, February 13 as they participate in the Golden Bear Classic, hosted by Kutztown University.
