Box Score 2 Clarion, Penn. - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Clarion, Pennsylvania on Friday, September 5 to open the 2014 season at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament at Clarion University. In two matches, the Panthers fell to Edinboro, 3-0 (14-25, 14-25, 22-25) and Concord, 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 21-25, 17-25). With the losses, the Panthers slip to 0-2 overall.
Adelphi vs. EdinboroThe game was tight at the start, as a
Haley Blunt kill knotted the action at 4-4, before a 9-2 run by the Warriors gave them a 13-6 lead on the way to a 25-14 first set victory. Set two was all Edinboro from the start, as the Warriors jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 10-3, taking another win by the score of 25-14. However, the Panthers would not go quietly, and took a 13-10 lead midway through the game on an Edinboro attack error. However, the Warriors responded with a 7-1 run to take a 17-14 lead before closing out the game, 25-22.
Haley Blunt led the Adelphi offense with five kills, while
Kaitlyn DeStefano and
Mandy Stanislovaitis chipped in four each.
Megan Manierski led the team with 11 assists, and Blunt and DeStefano had six digs each.
Adelphi vs. ConcordThe Brown and Gold momentum carried into their contest against Concord; although the Panthers lost a hard fought set one, 25-19, they used an 8-3 streak to close out game two and collect a 25-22 victory. In the third set, a Concord error tied the action at 17, but a quick three point spurt by Mountain Lions put Adelphi in a 20-17 hole they could not dig out of. The Panthers ran out of gas in the fourth set, and found themselves trailing by eight just 12 points into the set, 10-2, before dropping the set, 25-17 and the match, 3-1.
DeStefano put in a big effort with 13 kills, while Blunt and Stanislovaitis collected eight. Manierski picked up a collegiate career-high with 29 set assists, and
Sierra Crook managed 10 digs.?
Up NextAdelphi will return to the court on Saturday, September 6 at 1:00 pm against Gannon University, before closing out play at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament against host Clarion University.?
