Garden City, NY - The Adelphi University women's volleyball team strung together its third straight victory this evening with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-12) sweep of visiting, non-conference foe Chestnut Hill.
Three individuals,
Amanda Borges,
Haley Blunt, and
Shelby Stoner, each notched eight kills to share the team-high for the Panthers (3-9) while Blunt added 13 digs.
Sierra Crook totaled 14 digs in the three sets while
Alayna Jackson passed out 25 of the team's 30 sets and added five service aces.
Madison McBride led the Griffins (8-7) with seven kills while Alyssa Tamsing passed out 16 assists. Regina Trabosh racked up 13 digs.
The Brown and Gold jumped out to early leads in each set, starting with the first game. Jackson served an ace in three of four straight points for Adelphi to build a 13-7 advantage. The margin grew to 24-12 before the Griffins build togther to force a tough final point. After six straight points for Chestnut Hill, Stoner put the finishing touches on the game with a kill from Jackson.
Building an 11-2 run to start the second set, the Panthers needed a response when the Griffins evened the game at 20. Adelphi scored the next four points, including three with
Ajsha Mekulovic serving.
Kaitlyn DeStefano matched Stoner's effort from the first game with a kill to end the second set and put Adelphi up 2-0 in the match.
Pushing to end the match in three sets, the Brown and Gold scored the last seven points of game three with
Sierra Crook on the serve for the final six tallies. Chestnut Hill helped the cause with three bad sets in that stretch.
"Tonight was a good start to the weekend," said head coach
Danielle MacKnight. "We need to step it up tomorrow afternoon as we take on one of the top teams in our conference."
The Panthers are right back in action at home tomorrow afternoon with a Northeast-10 Conference match versus Saint Rose. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 pm and those who are unable to attend may watch free of charge, thanks to TD Bank, on AUPanthers.tv.
