Box Score Garden City, NY - The Adelphi University field hockey program picked up its second win of the season Saturday afternoon, after posting a 4-2 decision over Assumption College. The Panthers improve to 2-1 overall as the Greyhounds fall to 0-2 on the season.
Three different Adelphi players scored against Assumption goalkeeper Lauren Neilan, with
Lena Pollich leading the team with two goals in the second half for the win.
Mary Plotas and
Molly Cuevas found the back of the Blue and White cage in the first half
The Greyhounds were the first to strike with just under eight minutes into the first half. On a cross from the right side, Maria Beatrice put it past
Kelly Serrao off a pass from Paige Anderson to take the 1-0 lead. A Plotas-Cuevas combo in the twentieth minute evened the score at one apiece. Less than six minutes later, Cuevas took a reverse shot from the top of the circle that flew over Neilan to give Adelphi the 2-1 advantage. The half wound down, but not before Assumption struck again to even the score at 2-2 heading into the locker room.
With just one shot and two penalty corners in the second half for Assumption, Adelphi took offensive control for the remainder of the game. Freshman
Samantha Nizich sent a corner stroke to the top of the circle which Plotas blasted towards the cage to be deflected by Pollich past Neilan to take a 3-2 lead. Another Plotas-to-Pollich combo would seal the deal for the Panthers with a final score of 4-2.
Adelphi will host Dowling College on Wednesday, September 17 under the lights at Motamed Field at 7 p.m. Can't make it to the game, but don't want to miss out on the action? A live broadcast of the game is available at
