Box Score Old Westbury, N.Y. - The top ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team trailed, 2-0 just over five minutes into the action and were unable to dig themselves out of that early hole, falling, 11-6 to seventh ranked NYIT on Wednesday, April 23. With the loss, the Panthers slip to 13-1 overall, while the Bears improve to 11-3.
Brandon Goodwin and
Jamie McAndrew were the only two members of the Brown and Gold to post more then one point, getting two goals from Goodwin and a goal and an assist from McAndrew.
Ralph Faiella,
Joseph Sciara, and
Connor Duddy tallied Adelphi's other goals, while
Cory Stavis was credited with an assist in the loss.
Sciara also punched the time card on defense, causing a career-high six turnovers, while Tyler Felice Jennings, Faiella,
Ikerson Hopper and
Patrick Starke were also disruptive, causing a combined nine turnovers.
Gregory Puskuldjian led the Panthers with five ground balls and won eight of the 16 face-offs that he attempted.
Aidan Bennardo was charged with his first loss of the season, making eight stops.
The Bears were aggresive from the opening whistle, scoring the first two goals of the game, before Sciara's only tally put a halt to the NYIT run, 2-1. Unfortunately, Adelphi's goal did not change the tide of momentum, as the hosts added two more goals in the final five minutes of action, putting the Panthers in a three goal hole, 4-1.
Adelphi showed signs of life in the second quarter, getting back-to-back goals from Goodwin, which pulled the Brown and Gold within one goal, with 9:56 left in the frame. The Bears and Panthers would exchange goals, keeping Adelphi one goal down, 5-4, after Faiella's shot found the back of the NYIT net with 5:37 left in the half. After several scoreless minutes, the hosts exploded in the final 2:45, scoring three straight goals, with the final tally coming with just eight ticks left on the clock, putting Adelphi down, 8-4 at the half.
The third period was a defensive struggle, with just one goal, coming off the stick of Duddy, making it a three goal deficit with 15 minutes to play for the Panthers. That three goal margin, 8-5, was as close as the Brown and Gold would get, with NYIT opening the fourth with three straight goals, including two man-up tallies to put Adelphi in a, 11-5 hole on the way to a, 11-6 win.
Adelphi out shot the Bears, 42-35, and put more shots on goal, 20-19. However, the hosts picked up more ground balls, 33-28, and won more face-offs, 10-9, but turned the ball over more, 26-19.
