Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. – The Adelphi University softball team claimed the final two games of this weekend's series on Saturday at American International 4-1 and 5-3 to win the series three game to one.
The Panthers move to 21-14 with an 11-6 Northeast-10 Conference mark while the Yellow Jackets fall to 10-21 and 3-11 in the league.
A pair of outfielders, junior
Jaclyn Binstock and freshman
Niki Barbato each tallied three hits while Barbato and freshman infielder Melany Reichelt drove in two runs on the day. In the circle, senior
Katie Andrews and freshman
Lindsay Mapes each pitched complete games to earn the victories with a combined 15 strikeouts.
The Brown and Gold jumped out early in game one, the lone played conference game of the day, with three runs in the top of the second inning. Senior outfielder
Courtney Sullivan laced a double to left field to score Barbato. Sullivan and junior catcher
Mary O'Reilly scored during the next at-bat as Reichelt drove in both runs on a single.
Junior infielder
Victoria Wink scored the fourth run of the day thanks to a throwing error after she doubled to left field earlier in the inning. The host Yellow Jackets were looking for the comeback in the last half inning with two hits to start. However, Andrews limited the inning to just one run scored as she picked up the opening victory.
Game two featured the Panthers as the home team on the scoreboard as well as the contest being played as a non-conference, regional matchup.
Andrews appeared to carry her momentum from game one into the first inning of game two as she put the Brown and Gold on the scoreboard with a RBI double. American International proceeded to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the second before claiming the 2-1 advantage in inning three.
Andrews and Wink set the table and eventually scored for Barbato as singled to center in the third inning to put Adelphi up 3-2. Barbato then scored on a fielding error while sophomore infielder
Jordan Catalano later touched home on a wild pitch to put the Panthers up 5-2.
Mapes surrendered just one more run to pitch all seven innings and earn the win with eight strikeouts and just five hits given up.
Adelphi returns to action on Monday for a single game at NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn. First pitched is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
