Winter Haven, FL - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Florida, opening the 2014 campaign on Saturday, March 8 with a double header, facing Ohio Dominican and Ferris State at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida. Adelphi erased a one-run deficit late in the game against Ohio Dominican to kick-off the season with a 3-2 victory and followed that up with a hard fought, 5-3 defeat to Ferris State.

Adelphi vs. Ohio Dominican
The Brown and Gold scored the first of their three runs in the top of the first, briefly taking a 1-0 lead. After two consecutive outs to open the game, Victoria Wink singled to left to keep the inning alive and was rewarded with a run, thanks to a Katie Andrews single to center.

Unfortunately, Ohio Dominican took advantage of an Adelphi miscue and got some help from the sun, as a routine pop-up to second, turned in to a two-run effort by Ohio Dominican, giving them a 2-1. The next four innings would pass scoreless.

Jaclyn Binstock got things started in the top of the sixth with a single to right and was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt from Danielle Cutuli. A Wink drive to right field would leave her standing on second, and plated Binstock, knotting the contest at two, with just one out. Two batters later, Jordan Catalano slaps a single to shallow center field, but got just enough of the ball to allow Cutuli to touch home plate, giving Adelphi its first lead of the game since the top of the first.

Andrews did the rest, allowing no hits in the final six Ohio Dominican outs, to pitch the Panthers to their first win of 2014. Andrews threw a complete game, striking out two, allowing no earned runs and giving up just four hits in the win.

Wink was a perfect 3-3 on the day with an RBI and a run scored, while Andrews helped her own cause, going 1-2 with an RBI. Binstock was 1-4 with a run scored and Catalano was 1-3 win an RBI.

Adelphi vs. Ferris State
The Panthers trotted out, freshman Lindsay Mapes to start the second game of the day against Ferris State. Mapes walked the first batter and after a sacrifice bunt, put a runner on third, the Bulldogs got a single to left to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Mapes would settle in and give-up just one hit over the next two innings, keeping the Panthers within one run.

But, in the top of the fourth, Ferris State would capitalize on two Adelphi errors and get three hits, scoring four runs, pushing their advantage to 5-0. However, the Panthers would keep fighting, getting back-to-back-to-back done out doubles from Niki Barbato, Catalano, and O'Reilly, hanging two Panther runs on the board, in the bottom of the fourth. A fly out by Courtney Sullivan, was followed by a Christina Palmenteri single to shallow right field, giving Mary O'Reilly  just enough time to score, dragging Adelphi one run closer to tying the game, 5-3.

Adelphi threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but were unable to take advantage of the situation, and entered the final inning, still down two runs, 5-3. A 1-2-3 inning from Mapes in the top of the seventh gave Adelphi a chance to make up the two run deficit. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not take advantage, falling 5-3.

Mapes went the full seven innings, in her collegiate debut, striking out six, giving up seven hits and just one earned run. Barbato led the way offensively, going 2-4 at the plate with one run, while O'Reilly was 2-3 with one run and one RBI.
