Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to Georgian Court University on Thursday, March 20 in a doubleheader on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers hit their way to two wins over the Lions, as Adelphi totaled 20 hits in a 7-4 and 7-0 sweep. With the double dip, the Brown and Gold improve to 6-7 overall, while Georgian Court falls to 7-9.
Game One
The Panthers took advantage of the Georgian Court pitching early, scoring in the bottom of the first and the third to take a 2-0 lead. The first run crossed on a
Katie Andrews sacrifice fly to center, plating
Jaclyn Binstock.
Danielle Cutuli scored the second run, using a
Victoria Wink drive to left field.
Adelphi doubled up their run total in the fourth, kicking off the inning with an Andrews single. Andrews was moved to second on a balk and put her footprint on home when
Jordan Catalano belted a double to center. The second run of the inning was scored off the bat of
Courtney Sullivan, who single to third, scoring Catalano, 4-0.
However, the visitors would not fold, ripping off four runs in the top of the fifth on six hits, knotting the contest at four all. The Brown and Gold responded right away, putting two runners on with one out in the bottom of the fifth for
Niki Barbato, who slotted a hit to short, scoring Cutuli. Two batters later
Mary O'Reilly singled through the left side, scoring two more runs to put Adelphi on top, 7-4.
The three run cushion was enough for Andrews, who threw, 2.1 innings of relief to collect her fifth win of the season. Andrews allowed no runs, just three hits and struck out one, while on the mound.
Lindsay Mapes made the start, going 4.2 innings, striking out three and giving up seven hits.
Wink swung the hottest Adelphi bat in the game, going 3-4 with one run and one RBI, while Cutuli was 1-2 with two runs and O'Reilly was 1-3 with two RBI.
Game Two
The second game started similar to the first, with the Panthers jumping on the Lions early. This time the Brown and Gold scored three runs in the first two innings. Binstock opened the first with a walk, and Cutuli bunted her second and ended up standing on first. Two batters later, Barbato stroked a double to right center, plating both Binstock and Cutuli, giving Adelphi a 2-0 lead. An inning later
Melaney Reichelt reached first on a bunt and manged to trot home on a Binstock triple to right field, pushing the Panthers advantage to 3-0.
The next two and a half innings slipped by scoreless, but the Brown and Gold erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Cutuli scored the first run of the inning on an Andrews triple to right and Andrews was plated a batter later on a Barbato single up the middle. Adelphi's final two runs crossed home plate on a one out, Sullivan sacrafice fly to center that scored Barbato and Catalano would scamper home on the throw, 7-0.
Mapes went the distance, picking up her first collegiate victory. She tossed seven innings, giving up no runs, three hits and striking out four. Both Reichelt and Barbato went 2-3 with one run, while Barbato added three RBI.
