Softball Outlasts Dowling, 4-3 in 12 Innings

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team welcomed Dowling College onto campus on Tuesday, March 18 in their home opener on Janet L. Ficke Field. A Courtney Sullivan RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Panthers a, 4-3 victory over the Golden Lions. With the win, Adelphi improves to 4-7 overall, while Dowling falls to 4-7.

The visitors got things started early, hitting a solo home run over the wall in left field in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. The Panthers answered back right away, taking advantage of a Danielle Cutuli walk, thanks to a Katie Andrews two out double to left field, tying the game at one.

Cutuli followed her first inning run with her first collegiate home run, slamming the ball over the wall in left field to push Adelphi over Dowling, 1-0 after three innings of action. Less then an inning later Dowling's Crystal Tarango powered her second home run of the day over the outfield fence, knotting the game at two in the top of the fourth.

Jordan Catalano reached base in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Golden Lion miscue and was knocked home two batters later by Sullivan, who stroked a single to right field, putting the Brown and Gold on top again, 3-2. An RBI double in the top of the fifth from Dowling, tied the game one more time at three.

At that point a pitchers dual broke out, with six straight scoreless innings, until the bottom of the 12th. Catalano worked a a two out walk and was moved over to second by a Mary O'Reilly single. With runners on first and second, Sullivan waited for her pitch and knocked a single, allowing Catalano to cross home plate, which gave the Panthers a 4-3 victory.

Andrews led Adelphi, going 3-6 with one RBI, while Cutuli was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sullivan was 2-5 with two RBI Melaney Reichelt also collected two hits in the win. Lindsay Mapes opened the game with 4.2 innings of work, striking out three, and giving up just three hits, while Andrews tossed 7.1 innings of releif, striking out six, giving up five hits and no runs in her fourth win of the season.
