Middletown, DE - The Adelphi University women's bowling team traveled to Middletown, Delaware to compete in the Capital Classic Team Invitational hosted by Delaware State. The Panthers completed a 5-1 day, giving them a second place finish in team play.
Adelphi began the day by knocking off the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University by 228 pins, 914-686, as freshman Jackie Castelli (195) lead the way. The lady keglers then played a close match with fellow NEC rival Kutztown University, but prevailed by 60 pins, 923-863 as Colleen O'Neill (200) paced the attack.
The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University could not hold off freshman Laura Zaugg (222) on the way to a 113-pin win, 916-803. Following that match, the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn battled to the end but Castelli (194) and Leanne Reed (190) shined in a 24-pin stunner, 906-882.
Howard University Bisons saw Michele Fitzpatrick (221) and Kathryn Rivera (203) lift the Brown and Gold to a 264-pin win, 975-711. In the final match of the day the Panthers faced Fairleigh Dickinson University, who are currently ranked third in the country by the National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll. Fitzpatrick (192) and Rivera (192) both put in solid efforts but Adelphi fell short by 51-pins, 948-897.
The team held on to outlast FDU for second place by the narrowest of margins (1 pin) 5531-5530. In individual honors Kathryn Rivera was named to the All-Tournament team, by dropping 1168 pins. The Panthers are now 53-41 on the season. They return to action tomorrow in a single-day Baker Challenge.
