Oakdale, NY – One of the top scorers in the country helped propel Dowling College to a 92-78 non-conference win at home earlier today against the Adelphi University men's basketball team.
Duane Morgan went 10-for-13 (76.9 percent) from the field on the way to 23 points and 11 rebounds for Adelphi (4-6). Frontcourt mate
Ryan DeNicola added 15 points and 12 rebounds while
Michael Coffey also recorded 15 points that included three 3-pointers.
Darien Davis, the third leading scorer in the country entering today, stayed true to reputation with 37 points on 15 made field goals for the Golden Lions (5-6). He also contributed seven rebounds and three assists. Jerrell Harris and Ryan Hickey matched each other with 11 points and three 3-pointers.
Davis had the hot hand for the Golden Lions from the get go, helping to create a 30-18 advantage in a little more than 10 minutes. Adelphi stayed within striking range as a Liboria 3-pointer cut the lead to one point followed by two
Michael Coffey free throws to go up 35-34.
Dowling responded to retake the lead and end the first half with a 49-41 lead as Michael Guzzardi hit a jumper at the buzzer after rebounding the initial attempt from Donte Adams with three seconds left. Adelphi went 6-for-11 from the charity stipe in the first half while not allowing the Golden Lions a free throw attempt. However, Dowling turned nine Adelphi turnovers into 11 points.
The Brown and Gold opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers from
Damon Coleman and Coffey to get within two at 49-47 just one minute into the final half. From there though, the Golden Lions responded with a 9-0 run to force an Adelphi timeout up 58-47.
The Panthers were able to cut the lead to under 10 points three more times, however, Dowling continued to maintain the lead throughout and went up by as many as 19 points on the way to a 92-78 win.
The Panthers return to Garden City one more time before 2015 when they host LIU Post for a non-conference matchup on "New Year's Eve" starting at 2:00 pm.
