Women's Basketball Picks up Non-Conference Victory over East Stroudsburg, 65-43

Garden City N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team competed in their fifth non-conference contest against East Stroudsburg University at the Center for Recreation and Sports on Saturday afternoon. A close score at halftime resulted in an early second half Panther lead resulting in the Warriors falling to a 65-43 Brown and Gold victory. The Panthers improve to 10-0 overall as ESU falls to 2-5 on the season.

Leading the offensive end for Adelphi was Kelly Mannix who posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Nearly missing a double-double figure was Anh-Dao Tran who led all players with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Gomez, playing in her seventh game this season, brought in 10 points and six rebounds. For East Stroudsburg (2-5) Ryann Fiascki matched for points with Andrea Veres with 10 total points. Jessica Martin took away with 13 rebounds.

The first half opened with a Mannix layup at 18:22 getting the Panthers on the board. The Warriors quickly fired back with a Madison Tamburini three-pointer at 18:03 for a 3-2 lead. In the course of three minutes, a back-and-forth game ensued and both teams challenged for the lead. Adelphi was back in the game with a 9-7 lead courtsy of a Tran three at 14:57.

East Stroudsburg scored two points in the duration of three minutes to close the point gap at 11:59 for a 13-11 score. Over the last 10 minutes, the Warriors tallied a total four points, and they no shot opportunities for the remainder of the half. The Panthers rallied for points and put together a double-figure point streak to end the first half with a 27-17 lead.

Back-to-back Mannix layups opened the second half to give the Brown and Gold a 31-17 lead. Within a 20 second span, a Tran three pointer and a Halaby layup saw Adelphi add five points by 18:05. East Stroudsburg answered with a Jessica Martin jumper to challenge the point spread.

 At 13:54, Melissa Poderis shot a Warrior three-pointer for a 41-22 score. The Panthers took a 20-point lead (46-26) at 11:58 from a Gomez layup. In attempt to close the gap, East Stroudsburg took advantage of a shot opportunity at 11:20 for a Veres three-pointer. For the remainder of the second half, the Panthers kept a strong lead with no allowance for a Warrior point opportunity. Down the stretch, Adelphi pulled away and took home a 65-43 win.

The team returns to action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday, December 20 when they take on a non-conference matchup against Holy Family University at 1:30 p.m.
