Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University remained unbeaten earlier this afternoon with a 80-70 non-conference victory against visiting Holy Family. The Panthers were ranked sixth in the latest USA Today Top 25 Division II Coaches' Poll. The win improves Adelphi to 11-0 overall as the Tigers drop to 6-6 on the season.
Jenna Halaby led Adelphi (11-0) with a career-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals.
Sierra Clark added 12 points and eight rebounds in reserve duty while the Panthers produced a total of 15 steals. Erin Fenningham and Kasey Woetzel shared the team-high of 18 points for the Tigers. Woetzel added three assists while Fenningham hauled in six boards.
On the heels of a 3-pointer from Abigail Iannotti, Holy Family controlled an 18-9 advantage in the first portion of the opening period. However, The Panthers ran off a 15-4 spurt to take a 24-22 lead after a 3-pointer of their own from
Samantha Milhaven with 5:35 left.
Each team traded leads for the remainder of the period before Adelphi went into the break up 36-33 capped off by a Halaby jumper. Halaby finished the first half with 15 points while the Brown and Gold created seven steals that translated into 17 points off turnovers. Jill Conroy led the effort for Holy Family with seven points as seven Tigers were in the scoring column.
Adelphi faced a challenge midway through the second half with three individuals at four fouls. However,
Emily Brandt came off the bench to knock down a 3-pointer to afford the Panthers a 54-50 lead with 9:42 left and push momentum towards the Brown and Gold.
Holy Family continued to cut into the Adelphi lead, however, the Panthers used their defensive pressure and clutch free throws to finish out the contest 80-70.
The Panthers are scheduled for one more game before the New Year, traveling to West Liberty, West Virginia to face the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Wednesday, December 31 at 1:30 pm.
