Garden City, NY – A header from junior back
Taylor Groth in the late stages of the second half was the lone tally in a 1-0 win for the Adelphi University women's soccer team in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinal round this afternoon against Le Moyne College on Motamed Field.
Le Moyne controlled the earlier momentum, posting four shots in the first 10 minutes of action with the Panthers unable to create an attempt. However, the Panthers started to push the attack in the final stages to end the first period with a 8-7 lead in shots as well a 5-1 advantage in corners.
Both goalkeepers were forced to make three challenging saves in the first 45 minutes as
Sam Whitney made a few punching saves for the Panthers and Tori Corsaro stood her ground for the Dolphins. Lindsey Bakal and Kelly Ristoff each took three shots for Le Moyne while senior
Donna Liotine attempted two for Adelphi.
The Brown and Gold opened the first half with an early opportunity as
Jeanine Nunez crossed a low ball into the middle for
Laura Gomez, however, the shot was stopped by Corsaro diving low to her left.
Adelphi continued to keep the pressure on throughout the second half and finally broke through with a tally in the 75
th minute as a pair of juniors backs connected with Groth heading in a corner from
Taylor SalmonThroughout the last 15 minutes of action, the Adelphi backline stood tall and the offense continued to push forward, finishing the game with a 16-10 shot advantage while attempting 10 corner kicks and yielding just four.
As the three seed, the Brown and Gold travels to Albany on Friday to face the second seed Golden Knights of Saint Rose. Back on Tuesday, September 23, the two teams played to a scoreless draw in Albany. Game time is set to be determined.
