Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's volleyball team hosted regional powerhouse Bridgeport (21-2) in a non-conference match on Tuesday night in the Center for Recreation and Sports. Before the game, Adelphi honored its three seniors,
Kaitlyn DeStefano,
Haley Blunt and
Samantha Breidenbach. Undone by a .042 hitting percentage in the match, the Panthers dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-13) decision to their ECC opponents.
Blunt tallied seven kills while DeStefano added six to lead Adelphi (13-13), while
Megan Manierski totaled 18 assists. On the defensive end,
Sierra Crook dug up 12 balls, and the Panthers as a team picked up 11 total blocks.
Adelphi took a 6-2 lead to open the first set a run that was ended by consecutive blocks from DeStefano and Breidenbach, but Bridgeport took the next five points to claim a 7-6 advantage. It was the first of six lead changes in the first set, as Adelphi picked up the next two points to nudge back ahead. It was there that the Purple Knights began to assert the advantage, taking six of the next seven points to lead 13-9.
The visitors retained the lead for most of the set, before the Brown and Gold clawed back to take three straight points and lead 21-20. It would be the Panthers' last lead, however, as the visitors took five of six, capped by a Ying Shen kill, to take the set 25-22.
In the second set, Adelphi again started strong to claim a 5-2 lead. The Purple Knights brought the score even at 6-6, before the Panthers ran off six of the next seven points to lead 12-7. Adelphi continued to lead at 16-12, before the visitors' put together yet another run as they did all night. Six straight Bridgeport points, behind four kills from Sarah Rosa, gave Bridgeport the lead at 18-16.
The Panthers continued to fight back, getting to set point on three occasions in the second frame. However, Bridgeport tallied kills to save two, and the Purple Knights claimed the final three points behind two more finishers to wrap up the second set, 28-26.
The third set was all Bridgeport, as the visitors doubled up the Panthers early at 10-5, and never relinquished the lead from there. The Purple Knights' lead grew to 10 late, and while a kill from
Mandy Stanislovaitis kept Adelphi alive for a moment, a kill from Biljana Savic ended the third, 25-13.
Adelphi returns to action for its regular-season finale on Saturday, when they travel up to Merrimack College for a 1:00 pm Northeast-10 match.
