Cuevas Scores Four, Propels Adelphi to NE-10 Semifinals

The Panthers will play at #2 Stonehill at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Garden City, NY - The Adelphi University field hockey program scored three goals each half to advance themselves to the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals. With a final 6-2 decision the Panthers improve to 14-5 on the season and will face #2 Stonehill College on Thursday, November 20 at 4 p.m. The visiting Falcons of Bentley University finish the season at 10-9 after dropping the first round game.

Leading the offense for Adelphi was Molly Cuevas who contributed four goals and one assist in the win as Mary Plotas and Kristen Bagley were responsible for the other two goals. The Panthers held a 14-3 shot advantage over the Falcons in the first half alone and maintained possession for much of the game as the Brown and Gold defense allowed just eight shots from Bentley over two periods.

The Panthers fell behind early in the game, as the Falcons scored just eight minutes into the first half from a Sally James shot up high over the defenders and goalkeeper. Adelphi pushed the game to a tie as Mary Plotas scored her twenty-fourth season goal just a minute later. Off one of the eight granted penalty corners the Brown and Gold took the lead as Bagley found the back of the cage from the right side, off a pass from Cuevas.

Adelphi further cushioned the lead scoring three more goals before the Blue and White regained possesion and found a chance to score with 15 minutes to play in the second half. Bentley's Eva Michaliszyn scored her fourth of the year off a penalty corner, one of five granted in the second half.

Cuevas fired her final goal to the back of the cage with twelve minutes to go, sealing the deal for the Panthers who will head to the semifinals of the NE-10 tournament for the third year in a row. Livestats for the semifinal contest will be available here
