Field Hockey Blanks Franklin Pierce in Final Regular Season Contest, 5-0

Mary Plotas with her fifth hat trick of the season drove the offensive end for the Panthers.

Rindge, NH - Closing out the regular season Saturday afternoon, the Adelphi University field hockey team traveled north to New Hampshire to face the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University. The hosts dropped a 5-0 decision to the Panthers, who improve to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference while Franklin Pierce falls to 8-10 and 5-6 in league play. With that record, Adelphi will host a quarterfinal playoff game as the #3 seed in the conference tournament on Tuesday, November 18 against #6 Bentley University at 4 p.m.

Driving the offense for the Brown and Gold was Mary Plotas who completed her fifth hat trick this season. The other two goals were scored by Olivia Nowowkunski and Carly Aceves, with one assist each credited to Kristen Bagley, Molly Cuevas and Nowokunski. Kelly Serrao guarded the cage for the visitors, picking up four saves in the victory.

Plotas scored the first goal of the game off a rebound about five yards out just under twelve minutes into the first half. Much of the first half was spent in the Raven half of the field as Adelphi held a 10-1 shot advantage over the hosts. Nowokunski scored with under ten minutes left in the half that gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead as they headed into the locker room.

Less than thirty seconds into the second half, Aceves struck off a pass from the left and finishing to the right post for a 3-0 score. Plotas struck two more times to give the Panthers a nice 5-0 cushion as regulation came to a close, but not before an offensive push from the Ravens worked the Adelphi defense. Briana Rubenstein and Rachel Colvin each collected defensive saves in the final minutes as Franklin Pierce registered six shots on goal.

The Panthers draw the #3 seed in the conference tournament and will host the frist round on Tuesday, November 18 against #6 Bentley University on Motamed Field at 4 p.m.
