Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University women's soccer team upended an early season loss to Pace University by winning 2-1 earlier tonight in the ECAC Semifinal.
The Panthers controlled play on their end of the field for a majority of the first half, creating seven corners and attempting eight shots compared to allowing just one to Pace. However, that one shot created by Gihane Quintana forced the Adelphi backline to make a save at the goal line.
The Setters were on the attack early to start in the second half, forcing senior keeper
Sam Whitney and the Adelphi backline to make some early stops.
As the half moved on, Adelphi regained control of play that resulted in a goal from senior
Donna Liotine in the 66th minute. Freshman
Jeanine Nunez was credited with the assist as she headed on the ball for Liotine to deflect in.
Less than seven minutes later, sophomore
Laura Gomez finished on the back end of a cross from
Melissa Duarte to put Adelphi up 2-0. Gomez finished on the right side of the net as Duarte dribbled up the left flank and directed a cross that found the bottom of Gomez's foot.
Pace continued to bring pressure after the second Adelphi goal, forcing a foul in the box on the Panther defense that gave Alyssa Zeoli a penalty kick attempt. Zeoli's shot bounced off the hands of Whitney and rebounded into the other side of the net to bring the score to 2-1 in the 78th minute.
From there, the Adelphi control proved successful by creating 23 shots and giving up only four. Aisha Chauhan and Lauren DeSousa combined for seven saves for the Setters while Whitney made one stop.
Earlier in the night, Southern Connecticut State advanced to tomorrow's ECAC Championship by upending Newberry 2-1. Hannah Bodner scored her first goal of the season in the 71st minute to propel the Owls to final.
The ECAC Championship game will be played tomorrow at 4:00 pm on Motamed Field. Earlier this season, the Panthers upended the Owls 4-0 on Wednesday, September 17.
