Garden City, NY – Two overtime periods were not enough to decide a regulation winner before Southern Connecticut State upended the Adelphi University women's soccer team 6-5 in penalty kicks to win the ECAC Championship earlier this evening.
Betti Worth scored the final penalty kick to lift the Owls to the ECAC Championship, a shootout that went to nine rounds to decide the winner. Erica Ridella made four stops in the shootout to help the Owls to victory while also earning Tournament MVP honors.
Sam Whitney made three stops for the Panthers.
The beginning of the first half featured both teams exchanging possession for the early moments. Pace got its only shot of the first half in the second minute of play with Worth putting forth a header. From there, the Panthers pushed the attack for the majority of the period to create five shots and three corners. Ridella made three saves for the Setters in the first 45 minutes.
Southern Connecticut came out looking to attack early again in the second half, forcing Whitney to make her first save of the game in the 46th minute of action. The Owls continued that momentum throughout the second period, outshooting the Panthers 4-2 and creating two corners while yielding just one.
The Owls attempted both shots in the first overtime period followed by Adelphi controlling a 3-2 advantage in the second overtime. The Panthers also totaled three corner kicks in the extra periods to lead 7-2 overall. The Brown and Gold also finished the contest with a 10-9 shot advantage.
