Women's Basketball Downs LIU Post in Season Opener, 87-54

Panthers post five players in double figures in season-opening win.

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team opened its season against cross-island rivals LIU-Post on Friday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Panthers held the lead for the majority of the game, and outscored the Pioneers 47-26 in the second half en route to a 87-54 victory.

Adelphi (1-0) had five players post double figures, led by Calli Balfour and Anh-Dao Tran who dropped 17 points apiece. Kelly Mannix scored 16 points and went 6-7 from the field, while Lauren Nuss added 12 points off the bench behind four three-pointers. Rounding out the leaders for Adelphi was Sierra Clark, who chipped in 10 points. Mannix fell one rebound short of a double-double, as she led the team with nine rebounds, while Balfour pulled down eight. LIU-Post (0-1) was led by a 26-point performance from Chelsea Williams.

Graduate student Tran scored her first points in a Panther uniform just one minute into the contest, putting in a layup off of an offensive rebound to open the night's scoring. The Panthers and Pioneers went point-for-point before back-to-back threes from Tran and Balfour put Adelphi up five, 12-7.

The Panthers continued to lead for the majority of the half before a jump shot from Williams made the score 15-14 in favor of the Green and Gold at 11:15. From there, Adelphi embarked on a 17-9 scoring run over the next six minutes, capped by a Nuss three pointer, that saw them take control, 32-23 with 4:30 to play.

The Panthers maintained this lead for the duration of the half, and on the final possession, Nuss drained a buzzer-beating three from half-court to put Adelphi in the locker room with all the momentum, 40-28.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to hold on to a double-digit lead. Over the first nine minutes, Adelphi put together an 11-2 scoring run to expand their lead to 20, 57-37. The Pioneers were forced to play catchup for the duration, and pulled to within 12 behind a Williams three at the eight minute mark. However, consecutive threes from Nuss and Samantha Milhaven restored the Panthers' 20-point cushion, 70-49.

The Panthers never let up from there, and scored the final 11 points of the contest to come away with the 87-54 victory. Adelphi returns to action tomorrow for the second day of their NE-10/ECC Challenge, hosting NYIT in a 1 p.m. contest.
