Mannix Posts Career Bests, Women's Hoops Trumps NYIT 83-67

Garden City N.Y. - The Adelphi women's basketball team returned for a second day of competition of the ECC/NE-10 Challenge, and hosted NYIT in a non-conference match up at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon. The Bears held the lead for majority of the game before the Panthers fired back in the second half, taking the 83-67 victory and improving to 2-0. The visitors drop to 1-1.

Senior Kelly Mannix posted a career-high double-double figure with 29 points and 13 total rebounds. Anh-Dao Tran dominated the second half with a total of 21 points while pulling down five boards. Calli Balfour also reached double figures contributing 10 points and four rebounds. NYIT was led with a 27-point combined performance by Julie Williams and Monique Walker.

The teams were up-and-down the court before the visiting Bears pulled away in the first, going on a 20-5 run after being tied at 17 apiece. NYIT maintained a 10-point lead at 10:24 before a 3-point shot made by Lauren Nuss broke down the lead to six points and pushed the score to 31-37. A layup and three-pointer contributed by Mannix ended the first half with the Panthers trailing by three as they went into the locker room down 36-39.

The Brown adn Gold came out of the locker room fired up as they fought back to regain the lead just six minutes into the second half, 50-49 courtesy of a Jenna Halaby lay-in. Back-to-back free throws by Mannix topped off the Panthers' own 20-5 run to lead 74-54 with five minutes remaining in the half. The last six points for the Panthers were collected by Tran, who posted a 21-point performance in the second half alone, to end the game at 83-67.

Adelphi will open up conference play on Wednesday, November 19 as they host Southern Connecticut State University at 5:30 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sports. A live webcast of the game will be aired on aupanthers.tv, courtesy of TD Bank.
