Garden City, NY – Two late goals helped the Adelphi University women's soccer team clinch a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference win earlier this evening against Stonehill College.
The Skyhawks (8-7-2/6-6-2) struck for the first goal of the game more than halfway through the first on a corner kick. Meagan Elliot put forth the corner from the right side with Hannah Fay connecting on the header on the back side of the net, hitting the bottom of the cross bar.
Stonehill controlled the 1-0 lead into the halftime break despite the Panthers (12-4-1/9-4-1 NE-10) leading in shots, 4-3, and corner kicks, 4-1. Jamie Block made two saves for the Skyhawks in the first 45 minutes while senior
Sam Whitney made one save of her own with the other Brown and Gold stop coming thanks to a team save.
The Panthers continued to press forward the majority of the second half, however, were unable to get past Block. The offensive frustration came to a halt in the 85th minute as
Taylor Salmon, for the second straight game, connected on a direct kick goal following a penalty by the Skyhawks.
Almost exactly two minutes later,
Christina Dutcher was in the right spot at the right time as she deflected in the game-winner in front of the net with
Sarah Barone Stern pushing the ball through the middle.
Adelphi finished the contest with an 11-6 lead in shots coupled with a 6-1 advantage in corners. Whitney finished the contest with the one first half save while Block stopped six shots.
Prior to the start of today's match, the Adelphi Athletic Department honored the seniors playing in today's game. For the Panthers, senior
Sam Whitney,
Erin Carey,
Samantha Jehle,
Donna Liotine, and
Michelle Brown were recognized.
Both teams await the final results of the conference standings, with league games still being played tonight and tomorrow, to see their positioning in the upcoming NE-10 Championships. Quarterfinal round action is scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 4.
