Garden City, NY – A crossed ball in the 98th minute turned into the decisive game-winner as Saint Anselm earned a road Northeast-10 Conference 1-0 victory earlier this after Adelphi University in overtime.
After playing scoreless through regulation and into the first overtime period, JD Hayward played a ball down the left side that he then crossed into the middle of the box. At the other end was Colin Mahoney to finish on a one-time shot into the middle of the goal to lift the Hawks (3-5/2-4 NE-10) to the win.
In the first half, the Panthers (5-4/3-3 NE-10) controlled the pace of play with 14 shots compared to zero for Saint Anselm. The Brown and Gold also put forth seven corner kicks, however, was unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half, the Hawks began to gain momentum with three corner kicks and five shots. Adelphi still managed the half advantage with nine shots. Saint Anslem goalkeeper Stephen McLeod stood strong in between the post though, making five saves in the contest.
The Hawks just narrowly missed the game-winner in regulation Jack Heintzelman headed that was saved at the line by
TJ Butler.
Forwards
Diego Zuniga and
Michelangelo Sini pushed the attack for the Panthers with a combined 11 shots on the afternoon, five of which were on-target.
Looking ahead, the Panthers look to rebound this Wednesday with a 7:00 pm home conference tilt against the visiting Greyhounds of Assumption. The contest will be broadcasted live on AUPanthers.TV, presented free of charge thanks to TD Bank.
